We now have pics of all of this winter's Harry Potter lego sets, and unfortunately official word that they won't be available until March. (The disappointment was marked.) Plenty of pics beneath the fold... Read more... )

Thing to bear in mind: the 2019 Clock Tower goes EOL at the end of this year, and is clearly being replaced with this set. It's interesting that there will be this short of a gap between releases again, much like with the 2018 Great Hall / 2021 Chamber of Secrets sets. Anyway, if you prefer the older style, pick it up while you still can.

Another thing that stands out, the catalogue doesn't include the Potions Moment set. This may mean nothing, it could just be a decision of this individual store. On the other hand, if you liked the set and don't have it yet, just keep an eye out so you don't miss your window of opportunity.

From midnight this morning onwards for a week you can get double VIP points at the lego store. (Registering as a VIP is free and gets you a cute keychain, too. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Even if you never use the points, you might, so it's worth a shot either way.) They changed the VIP system a while back making it non-trivially more complicated, but I checked it at the time and calculated the standard VIP rebate for the leading currencies all as upwards of five percent of what you spend now off your next purchase (so double means upwards of 10%), but it can be difficult to follow the base maths so 1) I'll spare you and 2) I'm not revisiting that determination regularly; exchange rates are a pain in my backside. Additionally, these rebate systems are always a little problematic. They're designed to keep you coming back, there's always a minimum amount to get that rebate, the points eventually expire... Yada yada. As systems go, lego's is far from the worst, but a straight forward discount would obviously be better. For someone who used to buy the Creator Modular sets and / or the Winter Village sets every year, it still worked out advantageously for me, and it's certainly proved even more worthwhile since the rekindling of the HP series. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Mileage varies obviously. In other news: Target is offering the Harry and Hermione bundled maxifigure set for half price, and I'm positively green with envy. ๐Ÿ˜ข If you're in the US and these were on your shopping radar, I'd say get them now.

The first ever Lego CON takes place later today. It's a virtual, streamed 90 minute event starting in two hours - 5PM in London, 12PM New York, and 9AM Los Angeles.

There's also been news this week as to the HP sets retiring this year. By far the most significant news item is that the 75954 Hogwarts Great Hall is retiring NOW (released August 2018). That's been announced here before, but to emphasise, it's not available any longer at lego.com in Germany and the UK. (You should still be able to pick it up at some retailers, however, if you act quickly.) Lego trivia: you can tell a set has likely gone EOL when it's listed as "sold out" instead of "temporarily out of stock". The US lego.com still has it in stock, so again, act now if you want it. If past years are any example, prices will rise sharply soon, and availability will drop off after that. Read more... )

The MBoM is available once more at the US lego.com store.

If you wanted it, get hopping, because they run out quickly. Purchase over $75 dollars of Harry Potter legos and it will automatically be added to your cart. In addition, they've extended the offer for either the Fire Helicopter or Police Water Scooter lego City Polybags, you can add them to your carts for free. (Use code FR29 for the City Fire Helicopter or PC29 for the Police Water Scooter at checkout.)

Nifty. Now let's talk lego arbitrage for a moment. First and foremost, make sure you're registered as a lego VIP user. It's free and it gets you upwards of five percent of anything you spend off your next purchase. There's virtually no effort involved, the points are good for about a year and a half, and even if you have no purchases planned, it doesn't hurt to do this 'just in case'. (Plus, there are freebies. I got a snazzy keychain recently. Most satisfying. ๐Ÿ˜Š)

Next, even if you have all the HP lego sets you wanted and didn't care about the MBoM (๐Ÿ˜ฎ it's okay, we can still be friends), selling the MBoM on ebay in the states currently nets you upwards of $40 (as long as it isn't an auction <- do NOT go to auction atm). Set a price or best offer. You may need a bit of patience to find a buyer depending on the price you set, but you can place up to 200 ads per month for free, so it doesn't cost you anything but patience to wait. When putting your order together, you should also consider the average prices of lego sets in stores, or sets that are only available at the lego S@H and select wisely. For example, 40419, the Hogwartsโ„ข Students Acc. Set, is $15 on the lego site and often sells for over $20 on ebay. (Here in DE, it's only available at the S@H, ebay and amazon marketplace, which drives the price. Check your country by googling availability.) That right there means five student sets for $75, completely resold at present rates, along with the MBoM nets you upwards of $65 profit on ebay (and you can throw in the City poly bag, too). Ebay will charge 10% of the "final value" in fees (note: without an ebay shop, that includes shipping and handling). Hanging on to the sets and doing this at a later date almost always gets you better prices, too, but this model is if you didn't want to sit on the sets for any length of time.

Classrooms!

And the CRESTS, too, for that matter. ๐Ÿ˜† (See LJ / DW for details on the Hogwarts Moments classroom books. The crests were introduced here: LJ / DW)

So! It's January! (And a very Happy New Year, everybody! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ€) Which means the aforementioned sets are available on the lego shop@home websites (lego.com) as of today. w00t! (Honestly, chances are pretty good you'll be stuck with a back order status if you didn't order promptly at midnight (I, for one, did not. heh), but no worries. It will get there when it gets there. So why order now? Well, if you were going to anyway, the timing is right. Lego has a number of specials on this month. (Worth keeping in mind, in some countries, you'll be able to get the classroom sets at regular stores where you're often able to get discounts. It pays to know your local market. Germany for one isn't great on sales (compared to the US, say), and this year the prices - due to delivery issues and other coronavirus factors - have pretty much echoed lego's pricing (or worse, been higher. ๐Ÿ˜), so ordering from lego.com won't come at an additional price for me, especially given the offers they're currently running.)Read more... )

Alphabet soup? I think not! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Good news, people. The German site Promobricks reports that The Monster Book of Monsters set with Draco minifig (introduced here LJ / DW) is expected to make an appearance as a Gift With Purchase come January at the Lego Shop@Home (<- less than intuitively, perhaps, that's the preferred terminology for lego.com's store half of the site). Serendipitously, that coincides with the release of the Hogwarts Moments (LJ / DW) classroom books sets (not quite a fan of the name "Hogwarts Moments"; it sounds like a chocolate or a dessert or flavoured coffee or something) and the Hogwarts Crests (LJ / DW), so that should help people make the purchase requirements. In Germany that's expected to be 75 EUR (quite a relief after the recent 150 EUR limits), and the promotion should run for the entire month of January, or as long as supplies last. Worth mentioning: the MBoM is expected to retire after this. (It's conceivable it can reappear briefly at physical stores as the 2018 Bricktober minifig collection (5005254-1) GWP did, but it isn't planned as a regular purchasable set. So if you want it, see to getting it, or resign yourself to picking it up off ebay, bricklink, brickowl & co.)

Also, good news for people in the US, some sharp eyed shoppers have spotted the Moments sets at Kohl's stores already. Not sure how they were able to jump the queue, but there it is... (I've just checked their website, and they aren't available online. If you're interested, call ahead to make sure your local store has them in stock.) So if you can't wait, you can always find them there, but for the more patient among us, or those with less access such as myself ๐Ÿ˜‰, we'll (potentially) be rewarded / compensated with the MBoM opportunity come January. Fair enough, I think. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Given the Black Friday / Cyber Monday sales and Christmas shopping, this seems a useful list to cobble together. This is an attempt to list all the sets from the current series of Harry Potter lego, by year of release, with notes as to which sets are officially retired already or should retire soon, the books / movies they represent, and the minifigs included in the sets.

As for anything that hasn't been listed as "retired" or "retiring", I'd still prioritise buying the older sets off your wishlists first. Stonewars.de is the source for the information on which sets will be retiring soon or in 2021, as for the ones marked "RETIRING NOW" they are currentlydisappearing from lego stores around the world, and brickset lists them as no longer available in some countries' online lego stores. Don't panic, often you can find a recently retired set in toy stores near you, but if you want one, you need to act soon so you won't find yourself paying exorbitant prices on the resale market.
