As the title suggests, I've finished the digital model for the Butterbeer Truck and posted it on Mecabricks. As we don't have the instructions of parts list, it's a best guess, and unfortunately Mecabricks doesn't check if the parts are current or exist in a given colour, so I've eyed it and gone by best guess on both counts. I'll probably update it once the instructions are published if the inventory feature is working again over on MB.

Feel free to incorporate it into your digital Hogsmeade builds.

So I made a digital model of the Barnes & Noble Harry Potter lego 2024 "Back to Hogwarts" freebie promotional "Platform 9 3/4" vignette build over on Mecabricks. (Feel free to click through and twist it around and zoom as needed. Or just give me some love there, just saying... πŸ˜†) Read more... )

And now I've completed the provisional model of the new Diagon Alley set on Mecabricks. It's a cute build. 76439 Lego Harry Potter Diagon Alley: Ollivandersβ„’ & Madam Malkin's Robes and once yet again, they've changed the naming conventions in contrast to last year's set, eliminating the 'Diagon Alley' bit and including the second shop in the official name. No idea why, they're just making my OCD tendencies go bonkers. (Actually, I do have an idea why, and it's because the main stores are included in the D2C 75978 Diagon Alley set, so they're undoubtably trying to boost visibility for the 'hook' sets in the Diagon Alley-lite series, but that still doesn't soothe my desire to have it all nicely match. Marketing peeps, you know this is just going to cause the tidy little spreadsheet of sets to fail, right? feh) Read more... )

A REVIEW and MOC (My Own Creation) in three parts...
This is the second in a three part series reviewing the official lego Harry Potter summer 2024 wave's 76431 Hogwarts Castle: Potions Class and introducing gingerwitch's (MOC) modification thereof.

Today we'll look at the official lego set, 76431 Hogwarts Castle: Potions Class, and establish how many of those key features from the canonical classroom in the films have been represented and just how well at that. I'll endeavour to grade in a fashion somewhere between Snape and Sluggy. 😘Read more... )

Up next: the finale, Part Three, the eagerly awaited gingerwitch's MOC of the Potions Classroom.

Continuing what is now a tradition, I've tried to reverse engineer the lego Harry Potter Potions Classroom build on mecabricks, and I've come reasonably close. The neat thing here is you can see how it folds together. Key things to note,
1) I didn't bother too much with the hinges where I can't see what they're doing anyway; I'll just wait for the instructions to sort them
2) There must almost definitely be a rail piece under the chalkboard to facilitate sliding the module into the new Great Hall set, but again, too much guess work is involved as to what goes where at this point.
3) not all parts are available on mecabricks, and some substitutions have had to be made in the digital model. they've been documented over on the build's mecabricks page.
4) the validity to some of the criticisms of the modules: a) what do you do with the modules you remove, particularly as they aren't stackable? b) unlike the lavatory, corridor and Huffepuff common room, you can't see the inside of the Potions Classroom when it's folded together.Read more... )

So in this winter's lego Harry Potter winter 2024 wave, we got a cute little Ford Anglia set (lego 76424 Flying Ford Anglia - 165 pieces $15 | 15 EUR | Β£13). And as part of this summer's lego Harry Potter summer 2024 wave, we're getting a suitably terrifying Aragog set (76434 Aragog in the Forbidden Forest - 195 pieces $20 | 20 EUR | Β£18). While I love that they're actually producing small sets for the theme that can make a nice little present without breaking the bank, I have to ask: why didn't we get the first ever battered Ford Anglia from the scene with Aragog? All told, there have been 5 regular and one microscale Ford Anglias in sets in the 23 years of lego Harry Potter sets, and not one of them has been the mangled version we see at the end of CoS. (And that's not counting the nanoscale Ford Anglia builds in 2023's lego 76419 Hogwarts Castle and Grounds, 2022's 76404 lego Harry Potter Advent Calendar, and 2018's lego 71043 nanoscale Hogwarts Castle.) Why not? In fact, there are so few pieces required to make the change, I'd really like to know why they didn't include the pieces for both versions. If you're doing it from the outset, it's so much cheaper, and it would have barely dented the budget. Make it a dollar | Euro | pound more if that's what it takes, but they'd be giving us two builds for the price.

As this is a MOC (My Own Creation), there are certain considerations to make it more successful, and I'll explain those in more detail beneath the fold. Read more... )

Not Harry Potter lego news, for a change, but there's a new Gift With Purchase (GWP) available as of tomorrow (which generally means midnight. No clue how quickly this set will disappear from the shelves, but if you were thinking of making any large lego purchases, particularly the Jazz Club modular (which, so cute!), now would be a good time to snag them.

The lego Icons, 40586 the Moving Truck with 301 pieces GWP is officially available from 21st February through 03rd March 2023 with purchases upwards of 180 EUR in Germany (the amount can vary depending on your country). Those dates can vary, too. Generally speaking, when it's sold out, it's gone and won't reappear, so if you want it, place your orders sooner as opposed to later.

So I really wanted to try putting lego Harry Potter 40577 Hogwarts: Grand Staircase into the modular builds to see how it would all work together, which means I just had to build a model to give it a whirl... (Caveats: some parts are missing from the mecabricks database, and I'm working without instructions and kind of winging it.)

Obviously all of the uber lovely artwork is missing, a real pity as lego does that soooo well, but it gives us a good first impression. This is what it would look like from the inside when you hook up the other sets:Read more... )

I'm running a touch late for the occasion, but I've designed a digital lego set for [livejournal.com profile] milotzi: McGonagall's Quarters. (You can find it over on Mecabricks.) It converts the 76382 Hogwarts Moment: Transfiguration Classroom set into the Gryffindor Head's chambers while keeping the hallmarks of the Moment theme - all builds must be storable in the closed book format.

It's an interesting set of constraints, none of the builds can be wider than 4 studs, and a volume of no more than (roughly) 225 bricks. Unfortunately neither the stickers nor the book covers are in the Mecabricks database, so I've built the cover and simply had to do without the stickers. They'd be used just as they are in the original set.

Help the Matron get the vile Skele-Gro into Harry. Share Hermione's mortification at the Ossification Hex gone badly wrong on the poor Hufflepuff in the bed beside Harry's. (#noHIPAAatHogwarts) Help Ron polish off Harry's Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans (being supportive is hungry work, don't you know). Mind, they often taste no better than Pomfrey's Skele-Gro, so he's practically doing him a favour, really. He can be good that way. *nods*

I've made a new "set" on mecabricks. It's public, so anyone can play with it.

The most exciting thing about Professor Binns' History of Magic class is the fact he's a ghost, which is a bit sad really, because one might think the goblin wars were an interesting period, but no. Not the way he tells it. Unfortunately in addition to his wanting delivery, he also doesn't seem to believe in light or heat, leaving students to take matters into their own hands. That doesn't always end well. Luckily Blaise knows just the right spell. Read more... )

Recently I've posted a number of things I created on / using mecabricks. I thought it might be nice to share how to do that yourself, so here's everything you need to know to get started using mecabricks (and then some)... It's a practical guide, illustrated by building a little model. (You can spoil the result and look at it here, or just wait and see what takes form.)

Firstly, what is mecabricks? It's a free site on which people can view and create three dimensional virtual (digital) lego models. It stands out compared to other CAD software that lets you do this because it doesn't require you to install any software (it's strictly an online service) and because of the library / community that results from that. People aren't creating their models at home on their own computers and then looking for places to share them (and scattering them all over the internet, like IG, flickr, imgur or even livejournal, say...), that's all built in. They've provided an absolutely staggering range of pieces to work with and have a significant part of the official lego catalogue (here's the HP section) covered in their database, and then there are a wealth of MOCs (my own creations) on top of that. Have you ever wondered what a set looks like from the other side? You can see that here. For example, all of the official advertising for the 76386 Hogwarts: Polyjuice Potions Mistake only shows the set from one side. On mecabricks, you can rotate it at will and see it from any angle, including (with judicious zooming) from within the model. (It will look better if you click the gear icon at the top of the picture and select "BOUNDARIES" and "LOGO ON STUDS".) Or maybe you're looking for ideas for builds of your own; there are plenty of them here.

The journey starts at the mecabricks.com homepage, where you'll bet greeted by something like this:

And here's the latest instalment from my mecabricks series, Professor Flitwick's Charms Class.

Bits of inspiration...

"Owing to the potential for nasty accidents when objects kept flying across the room, Professor Flitwick had given each student a stack of cushions on which to practise, the theory being that these wouldn't hurt anyone if they went off target. It was a good theory, but it wasn't working very well. Neville's aim was so poor that he kept accidentally sending much heavier things flying across the room β€” Professor Flitwick, for instance." GoF Read more... )

Play features: Convert the desks to firstie height with the removal of only six pieces and let Hermione practice Wingardium Levi-O-sa with her quill. Help Neville finally succeed in moving his cushion, or give Professor Flitwick a hand cheering him up by making a cupcake "jive". And if perchance things do go wrong and the poor Professor is sent flying? Well Hermione is always ready with a helping wand should he lose his...

Stuff! So first off I've been playing with a cool tool / site called mecabricks. It allows you to make builds out of virtual legos, which is nifty both in terms of the pictures you can generate and the ability it gives you to envision designs of your own and make lists of parts you'd need to order to complete them.

This is an example of a build that doesn't exist as a set... Vorkosigan78 (also on eurobricks) had suggested putting the Prefect's Bath from the 75948 Clock Tower set into the new Hogwarts 2021 format. I played around with their idea a bit and came up with this:

2DF0E2A9-7647-4D57-9AB6-F886E67DCFDD.png

(Two obvious liberties: Myrtle is a ghost and not a poltergeist, and as such couldn't pick up the egg, and Harry's torso is tilted through a tile in a way you couldn't do with physical legos. Let's call it artistic license. πŸ˜‰)

The renders you can do on mecabricks are pretty cool, too.

Another thing I did while I was at it was add a number of the new sets to their library. (Seven official builds so far and one of my own made public.) In theory this means you can create pictures of your own with them, which is pretty sweet.

Other than that, a small pic of the new polybag has leaked, and I'm chuffed to bits:

CFD09D15-2256-4971-BFFB-394F9510728B.jpeg

Set number 30392 is called Hermione's Study Desk, it should have 31 pieces and cost about $4. I can't say how pleased I am to 1) see Hermione get a little love and 2) not get yet another Harry. πŸ˜† Also worth noting: the new owl that's only been available with the CoS set so far, and another Chocolate Frog collectible tile. That's by far the cheapest we've come by one yet. 😊

And the last bit of info I had for you, from the 12th through the 18th of this month, you'll be able to earn double VIP points on purchases at the lego stores (online and physical). That equates to about 10% off future purchases, so if you were thinking of getting the lego store exclusives like the wizarding world minifigure accessory pack, that would be a good time for it. 😊
