Photos! Good ones even! 😆

We have photos of the 2025 GWP (gift with purchase), and it's genuinely better than I was expecting! Lego Harry Potter 40770 Hogwarts Castle: Room of Requirement.

Let's not oversell it. Overall it's a mixed bag, to be sure, as it's in the format of the foldable classrooms which have issues based on their constraints / parameters. There's little way around that with the current 2024+ Hogwarts castle scheme, and folded, it's a bit of a mess. That acknowledged, this little GWP nicely captures the scene where Neville greets the trio in the RoR in Deathly Hallows (DH2), and DH (or HBP) sets are always welcome, and I haven't got a lot of room left to display things anyway. Plus it makes sense in combination with the Hogsmeade D2C set with the Hog's Head (it was that or an RoR with Dumbledore's Army (DA) practice). As a side note, it's largely something people can get in the ballpark of, building it on their own, if they miss this set. It's always nice when lego do that to reduce the FOMO. There are a few stickered pieces (the portrait, for one) that make it hard to directly replace, the adult Mimbulus Mimbletonia (the recolour of the potions bubbles presently only available in the 2025 76445 Hogwarts Castle: Herbology Class set, and then there are the hammocks... Still. An acceptable MOC is within reach.

Also, this year is now officially the year of Neville, just saying. At this point, we may be seeing more of him than Harry. To be clear, I don't actually mind that, but I do feel Hermione and the girls haven't been as fairly represented this year. If they were going to push Neville, they needed to tone down the Ron. And where's Ginny been hiding? Read more... )

Fateful is back with a new leak, and they've got this summer's version of Fluffy for us. WooHoo! And he's looking good. We can expect it to appear in the 76454 Hogwarts Main Tower set for something like $250 (more on that in a later post), which confirms rumours that it's a Philosopher's Stone / Sorcerer's Stone based set from first year. Pics of the two sets from the 2025 Lego Harry Potter Winter Wave are beneath the fold... Frankly they're good enough that even if you aren't normally the sort to peek at spoilers, this one is worth it.

Both sets come with a portrait from the collectible series introduced in 2024.Read more... )

In honour of Snape's most excellent arm printing (thank you, lego!), here Potter Puppet Pals' "Snape's Diary", which includes the even more excellent Snape's Ode to his Buttons (it begins at the 1:57 mark, but the embedded player doesn't seem to want to start from there):

Quelle surprise. 😉

I always keep an eye out for sets I can integrate into my lego Harry Potter builds, and in much the same vein as the Wicked sets, thanks to the Greek lego store and the sharp-eyed folks at Promobricks, we now have an advance peek into two sets from the Netflix hit "Wednesday". Expected release date, 01 October, 2024.

My first impression is that those two properties (Wicked / Wednesday) seem to occupy much the same space, at least visually, which always feels like a mixed bag. It's obviously nice to have more pieces and builds to flesh out a mood or your similarly themed MOCs, but it also makes the actual sets seem even less original than they might without the direct comparison. On the other hand, now is when they're relevant, so waiting or staggering them doesn't really make sense either. My second thought is that both of the Wednesday sets have very robust bases that I rarely enjoy paying for, but they do at least seem to be put to use holding the extra parts included in both sets, so at least there's that. It appears to be from promotional material sent to stores and affiliates, where several of the same images have been used in a variety of configurations and at least two potential campaigns. We definitely have 'Back to Hogwarts' and 'Happy Birthday, Harry' material. The first segment below comes from a South American ad celebrating Harry's birthday, and contains no spoilers (the same can't be said of the Back to Hogwarts posters below the fold from a Chilean lego store, if you'd care to avoid them):

Next winter's Harry Potter lego winter wave is expected to include 76441 Hogwarts Castle: Duelling Club - $24.99 with 158 pieces. At that piece count and price, it's unlikely to be a module like the 76431 HC: Potions Class was, so what might be in store for us? Along these lines, it might be best to turn to another licensed property for an indication. Read more... )

And now I've completed the provisional model of the new Diagon Alley set on Mecabricks. It's a cute build. 76439 Lego Harry Potter Diagon Alley: Ollivandersâ„¢ & Madam Malkin's Robes and once yet again, they've changed the naming conventions in contrast to last year's set, eliminating the 'Diagon Alley' bit and including the second shop in the official name. No idea why, they're just making my OCD tendencies go bonkers. (Actually, I do have an idea why, and it's because the main stores are included in the D2C 75978 Diagon Alley set, so they're undoubtably trying to boost visibility for the 'hook' sets in the Diagon Alley-lite series, but that still doesn't soothe my desire to have it all nicely match. Marketing peeps, you know this is just going to cause the tidy little spreadsheet of sets to fail, right? feh) Read more... )

Continuing what is now a tradition, I've tried to reverse engineer the lego Harry Potter Potions Classroom build on mecabricks, and I've come reasonably close. The neat thing here is you can see how it folds together. Key things to note,
1) I didn't bother too much with the hinges where I can't see what they're doing anyway; I'll just wait for the instructions to sort them
2) There must almost definitely be a rail piece under the chalkboard to facilitate sliding the module into the new Great Hall set, but again, too much guess work is involved as to what goes where at this point.
3) not all parts are available on mecabricks, and some substitutions have had to be made in the digital model. they've been documented over on the build's mecabricks page.
4) the validity to some of the criticisms of the modules: a) what do you do with the modules you remove, particularly as they aren't stackable? b) unlike the lavatory, corridor and Huffepuff common room, you can't see the inside of the Potions Classroom when it's folded together.Read more... )

Pix of the lego Harry Potter summer 2024 wave's 76440 Durmstrang ship and Beauxbatons carriage - 1229 pieces ($140)!

I'll start by saying I'm not really a boat person, and I don't have the space or the budget for this set... But! Despite that, I look at it and have to say it's a thing of beauty. They did a really great job on it. The smaller sized Beauxbatons' carriage is lovely, so well done. I still think it's a shame they've included it in the set with the ship, however, as I would have preferred the set $30 cheaper, but for those that missed it the first time around, I'm sure it will be appreciated. Also, take a moment to appreciate that box art. So much better than the art for the Great Hall, they've done well here, too.

Madame Maxime uses the maxi legs we've seen in the Avatar sets, meaning she's more posable for the first time. Fleur is nothing new, but Krum, Karkaroff, and Crouch Sr. are great minifigs (although it seems odd that Karkaroff hasn't got black hair) and welcome additions to the list of characters. Karkaroff and Crouch are first appearances since the reboot. Krum is the first appearance of that version.

There's some interior to the ship, not much, but then they had to invent it, and it gets the job done. Read more... )

We have more pix from the summer 2024 wave lego Harry Potter 76431 Hogwarts Castle: Potions Class - 397 pieces ($40)! Including a peek at the set folded together... The rear of the box gives us one look at it; the last picture here shows how it would slot into the 76435 Great Hall set. What to note about it: unlike the lavatory and the Hufflepuff Common Room, the set is then closed when folded together. The door can face outwards, however, so it isn't that it doesn't make sense, but it effectively can only be viewed or played with when it is not in the Great Hall set. given the number of people who complain about the inaccessibility or unplayablity (that's totally a word) of the 2021+ modular sets, I think I can predict that will meet with some displeasure. In as much as it won't collect as much dust, I can't say I mind it too much. The sliding feature means the modules are easily removed, the primary issue there is most of the ones they've designed are too open and prone to dust collecting, and storage of the modules is going to be an issue, particularly as they aren't stackable.

There are two 1 x 3 flat tiles on the centre base plate, presumably the opposite side we can't see uses the 1 x 3 jumper plate with two studs. This permits us to anchor the workbenches in a fashion that's easily removed to push it forward or set them off to the side for easier access for play.

There's a clip visible in the ingredients bench that doesn't make too much sense unless it's used to anchor the bench when the set is folded closed. There's a section of brick extending out from one of the arches to the left of the centre plate. On the box front art, it holds the new yellow flask piece, although that's more clearly visible in the first set up of the set somewhat further below. Snape's lectern rests on these bricks when the classroom is folded together. I don't believe it's used to hold the folded set closed, because I think it would need to extend into the massive cauldron's space to do so. That cauldron definitely seems brick built. I'm wondering why that was deemed preferable to the large cauldron piece they have?Read more... )
