Part three in our exploration of the official announcement of the lego Harry Potter summer 2025 sets and this autumn's advent calendar. You can see the following sets here beneath the fold in third and final part of this series:
76452 Quality Quidditch Supplies & Ice Cream Parlour
76454 Hogwarts Castle: the Main Tower
76456 Harry Potter Advent Calendar 2025
From the 2025 summer wave of sets:
76452 Quality Quidditch Supplies & Ice Cream Parlour | 6 minifigs + Slytherin Quidditch Uniform Mannequin | 795 pieces | 100€

First things first: they've eliminated the horrendous pink of the Quidditch shop, for which I couldn't be more grateful! (*insert happy dance here*; I truly loathed the pink.) Unfortunately instead of going with the greyish-blue fronts and lovely blue window framed version we've seen before, they're using the medium nougat bricks, which is a fairly depressing brick colour. It would appear the store cannot catch a break, or does so about as well as Ron Keeps on a regular day. 😉 Nevertheless, the new dark red windows remain a strong and attractive choice, and I'm always glad to see them.
Another oddity from the leaked photos: Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour was suddenly a corner shop. Considering it generally appears in the middle of the row of Diagon Alley shop fronts, that raised some eyebrows and questions. That mystery has been neatly solved now, as it turns out the set can be folded open to easily make a flat store front so it can slot into the middle of the street. Builder's choice! W00t. That's a nice touch, and although I do feel it forces the window / door / frontage proportions to be a bit clunky, the interior floor measurements are certainly no smaller than they've been in some of the other stores in this series, so let's welcome the flexibility, shall we?
The Ice Cream shop does have some strange choices, however, like windows of little purpose in the side / support walls. They neither make sense in the corner shop configuration, nor when it's in the middle of the row, and the interior is one of the weakest in a series of often weak interiors. They attempt to balance this with two small exterior builds, a nicely rendered soft serve ice cream cart and a table with an umbrella and two seats (noteworthy as the two interior tables have only a single seat each, although it can be positioned to suggest it's part of the shop's interior), so there's that. Overall, as I've said before, I can't say I find the row of shops that convincing measured against 75978, the Diagon Alley D2C set of beauty (the garish pink of the QQS notwithstanding), and this set does nothing to change that view, but in general the sets do have some updated pieces to improve the original builds (like the rounded windows for the bay window displays or the gorgeous new wands), or a building not yet covered (Madam Malkin's and the Owl Post), but this set doesn't appear to do either. There is, however, the proportionately increased minifig count, and it's one of greater variety, given we haven't seen the proprietors of half of the shops before. (eg Scribbulus, QQS, Flourish & Blotts, and even the Daily Prophet only came with a photographer. We were forced to wait for the release of a (fairly pricey) book to finally get Rita Skeeter as a minifig.)
As for the minifigs included here, they're trying their level best for diversity, a bit of a necessity in light of the utter rubbish in the overall wave count and with a view to the catastrophic selections for the Main Tower. (more on that below) The set includes the QQS (Quality Quidditch Supplies) proprietor / shop owner, Katie Bell, Alicia Spinnet, Cho Chang, Ron Weasley, and Ice Cream Parlour owner Florean Fortescue, four females and two males, and three POC, only one of whom is wearing gloves. Frankly that usually sets me off complaining (obligatory whinge: if they're going to try to increase the racial diversity of the sets, kindly give us the appropriate hands, would you?), but as the shopkeep's torso appears to have interesting Quidditch patches and emblems (snitch, goals), it's nice that the gloves will allow us to use the torso for a greater range of MOCced characters. That said, and while I nominally like the witch's hat / hair combo pieces, in this case they've reused Sprout's hat piece, which includes the Mandrake-proof protective ear-wear. In the absence of walkmen et al in the Wizarding Society, that leaves me at a bit of a loss. Why? It's like the mistake with 2018's Snape's leg-printing in hp134a which has a line at the waist (the so-called "shirt tail" pattern) that it shouldn't, and is corrected in later editions. There's also a Slytherin Quidditch Uniform wearing mannequin, that should count to the total minfig count, and I'm pleased to see two Keeper's helmets included, although I really wish we'd seen at least a single printed leg piece with knee protection and one or two shoulder pads. (Perhaps something for a future Polybag, or if they ever resume the Hogwarts Accessory Packs? lego, if you're listening...) I also wonder why we're seeing the Slytherin Robe piece (again; see Main Tower) instead of the Slytherin equivalent of the Quidditch jumper like the Gryffindor one Alicia's wearing, but from a visual design standpoint (as opposed to product design), maybe it's better it's not too matchy matchy (
erexen?), but then it would be nice to see the Slytherin jumper (sweater) piece included elsewhere.
76454 Hogwarts Castle: the Main Tower | 12 minifigs, Fluffy (!), Fawkes, Hedwig, spider | 2135 pieces | 250€
Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Neville Longbottom (in pyjamas! Petrificus Totalus!), Lisa Turpin (Ravenclaw robes), Ernie Macmillan (Hufflepuff robes), Dean Thomas (Gryffindor robes), Percy Weasley (open Gryffindor robes), Marcus Flint (Slytherin Quidditch robes, not school uniform robes like the rest!), Professor Kettleburn (Care of Magical Creatures), Nearly Headless Nick (Gryffindor House Ghost), Professor Dumbledore

minifigs and creatures included in the set Professor Kettleburn (Care of Magical Creatures), Fluffy, Fawkes, Headmaster / Professor Dumbledore, Ron Weasley, Hedwig, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Neville Longbottom (in pyjamas! Petrificus Totalus!), Dean Thomas (Gryffindor robes), Marcus Flint (Slytherin Quidditch robes, not school uniform robes like the rest!), Nearly Headless Nick (Gryffindor House Ghost), Percy Weasley (open Gryffindor robes), Ernie Macmillan (Hufflepuff robes), spider, Lisa Turpin (Ravenclaw robes)

This is a tough one, but the bottom line is I don't see myself picking it up anytime soon, and if at all, only when seriously discounted. First and foremost, I am seriously disappointed in the minifigure selection. On the one hand, I think it shouldn't make such a difference, it's not like I keep the minifigs segregated to the sets they came with, but on the other, this is so ridiculously skewed, I just don't feel like prioritising it. Of the twelve minifigures included, only TWO are female. Congratulations, you've lost me. Oh, and we're getting Nearly Headless Nick - again - and still haven't had a Bloody Baron.
The next issue is it's ridiculously expensive - just how much are we supposed to shell out for the present version of Hogwarts? - and far too large, and contains an absurd collection of spaces. There are three flights of the swivelling and turning stairs of the Grand Staircase (nice, but perhaps overdone in scope), definitely not the best or most interesting version of Dumbledore's office, plus the Gryffindor Common Room, the Gryffindor Dorm with two beds (scarcely improved over the 2018 version, and we still haven't seen a Slytherin Dorm since the reboot), another essentially empty area for Fluffy (already met with derision in the 2021 version; canonically correct, but boring), and several of the Philosopher's Stone challenges. First, as mentioned, we find Professor Kettleburn's and Hagrid's Care of Magical Creatures Challenge, the taming of Fluffy the three headed dog with music. As in the film, a harp is employed. Next is Professor Sprout's Devil's Snare Herbology Challenge (Hufflepuff represent!), again barely improved over the 2021 version. Then we move on to Professor Flitwick's Charmed Magical Flying Keys (three cheers for Ravenclaw), oddly enough in a version without wings. (Very strange indeed as that's pretty much their Hallmark and there is a wing piece that fits the bill nicely, used previously in 2001's 4704 The Chamber of the Winged Keys. After comes Professor McGonagall's Transfigured Wizarding Chess Challenge (Gryffindor is in the House). Then we Apparate (one might suppose) to the attic where we find the Mirror of Erised and Dumbledore's final Challenge for the Philosopher's Stone (Gryffindor again). In addition to being creatively located, the space is very minimalistic, consisting of a couple of flames on the floor, not that the others were all that much better, and of course they haven't included Quirrell / Voldemort / Quirreldemort again - just as well, as we had him in the Great Hall, but it makes it more difficult to play out the scene. On the other hand, the Troll was the DADA Challenge, and he, too, was in the last set. So that leaves us with five of the Challenges represented in this set, and six of the seven in total between the two sets, from four of the five core courses, three of the four Houses. What's missing, you might ask? Why Snape's (Slytherin) Potions Riddle, as usual, which considering how bare the Mirror of Erised challenge was, could have been equally sparse in its representation. All they needed was a few potions bottles... but no. There's not even that.
Then there's the question why there's no Slytherin school uniform, but another Quidditch Robe instead (see QQS above, and of course given we get the robes in that set, perhaps the jumper would have made more sense here). As we can come by the Slytherin school robes inexpensively in the Draco in the Forbidden Forest Polybag, their absence here isn't so bad, but it remains odd.
But enough griping, let's look at the positive... The Fat Lady adorns the entry to the Gryffindor Common Room, and she even swings open this time. Fluffy guards a functional trapdoor once more. The Griffin that guards the passage to Dumbledore's Office is also here. There are six of the collectible portraits included in addition to what is almost definitely some lovely portrait artwork in the form of stickers. Percy, Kettleburn, Neville in his pyjamas, and a truly good Fluffy. Unfortunately, for my money, that's not enough to justify the price. But perhaps when it goes on sale. (Not that that would help my space problem... 😆)
From the 2025 autumn wave of sets:
76456 Harry Potter Advent Calendar 2025 | 8 minifigs | 278 pieces | 35€

The (European) price has remained stable from last year, which is a relief. Most of the buildable magical creatures and objects have been released in larger sets, so maybe some folks will appreciate having smaller versions to either display in parallel to or in replacement of those sets (or on their trees, whichever). I believe Butterbeer, Bertie Botts Beans, and the Amortetia and Skele-gro are the exceptions, plus as I've noted before, the Galleons are the same as the ones in the Gringotts set and increase accessibility, instead of gating them behind a 430 € set. Props for that.
As you can see on the box art, each of the House Christmas jumpers (that's "sweaters" for the Yanks 😉) has a creature on it, rendered in perfect lego-y style to match creatures lego has previously released, which is a nice touch. Ravenclaws get Pixies (because they're blue? because they're creatures of the air? probably that), the Hufflepuffs have Mandrakes (earthy critters, makes sense), and the Slytherins have Grindylows (water creatures at home in the Black Lake, comfortably viewed through their windows)... And Gryffindor gets... an owl? If we're sticking to elements, clearly they needed something fire-based, but aside from Fawkes, which might be too Dumbledore-ish, the only HP creature that comes to mind that they've released is the Fiendfyre dragon, which isn't in the same category as a single piece lego creature. Clearly past time they gave us a Skrewt! (Not that that seems likely to be a single piece either, but definitely smaller than the Fiendfyre.) Or bite the phoenix bullet and use Fawkes after all. Owls are weird anyway, as they're only sort of magical creatures, and the only one of the four creatures chosen that muggles can see. Sort of like how the House animals aren't magical: lions, snakes, eagles and badgers; they didn't just take a griffin for the Gryffindors instead and leave us with a single magical creature amongst the lot. Choice of creature aside - and worth emphasising, I haven't a better suggestion just at the moment - I've seen complaints about the sweater art, but I can't agree. I think the respective animals have been beautifully captured, and as usual adore the artwork. I can't wait to see the inside of the box, because that's where the lego artists usually shine.
We now have confirmation as to the minifigs included as well: Gryffindors Harry Potter and Angelina Johnson, Slytherins Draco Malfoy and Blaise Zabini, Ravenclaws Luna Lovegood and Cho Chang, and Hufflepuffs Hannah Abbott and (middle aged? 😆) Cedric Diggory (I'll give Hannah first billing by virtue of her appearing in more than a single film, although I suspect Cedric may have had more total screen time; c'est la vie).

Date: 2025-05-07 07:00 am (UTC)The Slytherin jumper would have been especially nice, regardless of the matchy matchy feel, simply because Marcus Flint is Already wearing the same Slytherin quidditch uniform instead of house robes. So we got some much needed variety in the minifigs, and thanks to QQS / Fortescues, some more females.
Still miffed at Lego's Main Tower leaving out the Potions riddle in the protection of the Sorcerer's Stone, like we needed a poorly done Devil's Snare again (Seriously, how Many do we Truly need?). The Fluffy seems Much improved on the last awful brick built version. Not impressed that the winged keys seem to be Missing their wings...? If they were made out of chickens, I'd worry that Crabbe & Goyle got there first. Same barriers on repeat, meh, give me something new about the SS sets. Ditto on same old same characters, but I'm thrilled about Kettleburn and the extra students, plus a Percy (since I didn't get the book version). Just wish there were more girls. And considering the entire wave... How many Nevilles, Ron's, et.c, do we really need... and why is there not a single Snape or McGonagall? Or some of the other adult characters, Pomphrey, Vector, Sinistra, or where is Professor Binn's, instead of another Nearly Headless Nick? All in all, not particularly excited at this year's summer wave.
Really not excited about the Advent calendar, tiny barely recognizable critters, meh. I do like the sweaters, though I think it comes down to Harry Potter, thus Hedwig (oddly with ear tufts?).
Heavens, this was No Small amount of effort to pull all of this together! Thank you for your insightful thoughts and information.

Date: 2025-05-11 07:42 am (UTC)Smiley student Ron is adorable in that top set and I was surprised at the cost of the castle - I have the big one and this just seems super small, I do like Professor Kettleburn! Recently reread some great fics featuring him and our snarly young professor... I think I need that Advent set this year!
