And we have them! Set names and rudimentary descriptions of the Lego Harry Potter theme's winter 2024 wave! It's largely remakes / reimaginings, which this far into an evergreen theme with minimal new source material was to be expected. Fair dinkum. I do think they've missed a trick or two by not exploring scenes they haven't visited before, but it sounds like they have some ideas to keep things interesting, so let's take a closer look...

Sorted by price:

Lego 76424 Flying Ford Anglia - $14.99 (165 pieces) - The Ford. (Again.) Includes two minifigures: Harry and Ron, plus a Hedwig and a rat figure. Due to the inclusion of what must be Scabbers, it's almost definitely yet another 'return to Hogwarts' scene from the beginning of CoS. As we have a new Hogwarts Express on the shelves as well since this past summer (summer 2023 wave), it will help complete those scenes, although obviously it would have been nice to get a version of the Anglia that we've never had before from the end of that year, perhaps in conjunction with the Forbidden Forest set. (see below 😉) Seriously, I get that the car is iconic, kids love them anyway, and remakes are inevitable, but why not do something new while you're at it if you can?

That said, aforementioned price point is an intriguing one, which to the best of my knowledge we haven't had for a regular set since the 2018 reboot of the theme. To be honest, I had hoped for another minifigure / Accessory pack instead, and can't say the description is winning me over, as you may be able to tell. 😆 Whinging aside, however, it is lovely to have some affordable HP sets available as small gifts for those of us who aren't minted (thank you, lego!), something that was sorely missed in the 2023 lineup. Accessibility matters. The Anglia has previously been seen in minifig scale format in: 2002's 4728 Escape from Privet Drive, 2010's 4841 Hogwarts Express, 2018's 75953 Whomping Willow, 2020's 75968 4 Privet Drive.

Lego 76425 4 Privet Drive Sign with Hedwig - $19.99 (337 pieces) - Includes a small, brick built Hedwig that can be placed on top of the Privet Drive sign. Apparently this will be somewhat in the style of this summer's buildable Dobby. That was nicely done, and cleverer than one might expect, so I'll reserve judgment until seeing it. See also: 2020's 75979 Hedwig, which was also very cool (especially if you built it so it can breakdance), but had a pretty large footprint that not all of us can afford space-wise. This appears to address that.

Lego 76432 Forbidden Forest: Magical Creatures - $29.99 (172 pieces) - Forbidden Forest build with assorted magical creatures. Includes at least two minifigures: Ron and Hermione, as well as the eponymous creatures, one of which is rumoured to be a Hippogriff, probably Buckbeak, in which case this is likely a PoA set. The piece count at this price point makes a swarm of buildable Acromantulas, say, less likely than moulded Beasties. Depending on said Beasties, though, that might still be a good thing.

Lego 76426 Boat House / Arrival at Hogwarts - $37.99 (350 pieces) - The boathouse with two small boats. The set is supposed to be another 'Hogwarts module', which likely means a continuation of the 2021+ modular style at least this far into next year; interesting, if true, in as much as there was at least a rudimentary boathouse structure in the mega-Hogwarts modular build. On the other hand, it was comprised of courtyard modules, so perhaps they'll be reused elsewhere in the assembly. (I do look forward to seeing if they update the 'master plan'. 😃) Includes four minifigures: Harry, one of the professors and two students. Snape, for obvious (if conflicted) reasons, was the first professor to come to mind, but now that we have the full set name 'Arrival at Hogwarts', I think we can assume it's a scene from first year instead. Hagrid, another obvious option, will already be available in another set in that wave, and a more recent rumour says the Professor in question is Professor McGonagall. So we'll say this is a PS/SS set that enables us to re-create an iconic DH scene, similar to how the Astronomy Tower pretended to be about a scene from early in HBP instead of the one at the end with which everyone actually associates the Tower. NEW LOCATION!

Lego 76430 Hogwarts Owlery - $44.99 (364 pieces) - The Owlery. It wasn't always present and when it was, it changed form and location at some point in the films. Off the minifig selection, this is OotP. This build will take the form of a tower, and it will be interesting to see if it continues the modular format or begins something new. How much significance that latter would have is questionable, however, as it stands apart from the rest of the castle in that iteration. (Summer 2024 should prove interesting to see how they continue this.) Includes three minifigures: Harry, caretaker Argus Filch and Cho Chang. NEW LOCATION!

Lego 76428 Hagrid's Hut: An Unexpected Visit - $74.99 (896 pieces) - The cottage and a small side build. Hagrid's hut itself is 'open' (presumably it's another half cottage, open to the rear), and the interior holds a sofa, armchair, table and plenty of familiar knickknacks from the HP series. Includes five minifigures: Hagrid, Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Draco, and figures of Fang the dog (!) and Norbert(a) the dragon. The latter two have long been requested by fans, so this was especially nice to hear. Based on the inclusion of Norbert(a), it sounds like this is PS/SS. REMAKE: 2001's 4707, 2004's 4754, 2010's 4738, 2019's 75947.

Lego 76429 Talking Sorting Hat - $99.99 (561 pieces) 18+ - And lastly, it appears the rumours that survey some time back sparked are indeed true, we're getting a buildable Sorting Hat. Collector's set 18+. The hat is supposed to have a movable mouth, eyes and eyebrows, in addition to a sound brick, which I imagine will sort people. (Slytherin!) Approximately 30 cm in diameter. This sounds like it's an expansion of the moveable Creatures (Hedwig, Fawkes, Hungarian Horntail) while also being a potential addition to the Hogwarts Icons build for those that splashed out. It will be a pass for me, but I really do like how they try out different kinds of builds at different price points and sizes. I think it's a great strategy and a good way to make more people happy with at least some of what's on offer at any given time.

Caveat: There's still some fuzziness about the descriptions, particularly as they seem to come from a Polish catalogue. (Believe me, things often get lost in the translation. 😆 Shoutouts to Yaxley@EB and faniklockow.pl for providing the information.) Expect some imprecision in the set names, but the scenes they can be expected to depict are generally accurate. Also, in the past, the minifig lists have been less certain than the set themes. (Remember, the rumoured 'Professor McGonagall' turned out to be Librarian Irma Pince in the Dumbledore's Office set. Similar errors are possible, and we don't know to what extent our leakers base the information on small, fuzzy pictures or imprecise text descriptions that have often been translated back and forth repeatedly.)

On that basis, I could imagine that the Forbidden Forest set is the Detention scene from PS/SS, for example, or at least reflects it as well, and Draco appears there instead of in Hagrid's Hut, particularly as two minifigs are a bit thin for a $30 set, although obviously that depends on the Creature moulds included. Draco also makes sense in a third year CMC (Care of Magical Creatures) class with Buckbeak, who seems to be included, like in 2004's 4750.

It's also possible that we could see Lucius Malfoy in a CoS Hagrid's Hut instead, which would be nice as thus far he has not appeared in a regular (non-D2C) set since the reboot (only in the very pricey Diagon Alley and very affordable books that unfortunately not everyone seems to have easy access to - sorry, guys), and 'Malfoy' might be the source of the confusion. (Also, lemme just say: not all Malfoys are created equal... 😆) As we saw in the 2018 Great Hall, just as a single 'for instance', sometimes they include things specific to different films in the same set (the Mirror of Erised & Professor Quirrell (PS/SS) and the Basilisk (CoS)) and cover more than one year in a build, so Norbert(a)'s inclusion isn't necessarily determinative.

And because it needs doing, on the topic of Malfoys, allow me to whinge briefly that we still haven't seen a Narcissa since the reboot (for shame! for shame, do you hear me?), which I find disappointing, particularly as both a Forbidden Forest set and Hagrid's inclusion in this wave make another small Forbidden Forest set with him accompanying Madam Malfoy (like 2011's 4865) this summer less likely. It's looking increasingly likely we'll need to wait until at least 2025, or for some vastly overpriced book to fill the gap.

Also I'm sure this is wholly unexpected coming from me, but where's DH BoH Ron?

Further there's a clear lack of Snape in the lineup, the red headed stepchild of the theme (I get to say that as I have personal experience with being both 😉), although the equal lack of Dumbledore compensates for it somewhat.

Other than those mentions, a minifigure round up shows we have five sets with sixteen minifigs advertised between them, although only fourteen are specified as yet, giving us eight distinct characters at present. A closer look reveals: 4 Harrys, 3 Rons and 2 Hermiones (inverting 2023's Hermione / Ron prevalence), 1 Draco, 1 Cho, 1 Professor McGonagall, 1 Hagrid, 1 Filch, and two as yet unspecified students. In absolute numbers, that's 11 Gryffindors, 1 Slytherin, 1 Ravenclaw and NO HUFFLEPUFFS! (A worrisome trend. 😉) Likewise there are 10 males and only 4 females, which is disappointing, although as the stories focus on a male Gryffindor, and the main characters are Gryffindors, in all fairness, we probably can't complain too much, and they do get bonus points from me for apparently not including a Harry in each and every set. 😊

More exciting news!!! Totally agree on most of your thoughts and opinions, though I might go for the Sorting Hat, provided it Actually Does include "Slytherin!". If not, eh ... meh. Can't wait for confirmations, they always make the speculations fun. 💚
