Back to Hogwarts!
As an added bonus, as part of what's shaping up to be a yearly B2H celebration, many Harry Potter lego sets and accessories are eligible for double VIP (Insiders) points, which equates to a discount off a future purchase of roughly 10% of the current purchase's price. I know that's a complicated way to put it, but it basically boils down to this: if you purchase $100 worth of qualifying items during the 2x event, you could redeem your points to get a $10 discount off a future purchase. Or the points can be redeemed for a variety of exclusive lego sets and collectibles for that matter. In fact... there just so happens to be a special lego Harry Potter reward available only for Insiders via the rewards section...( Read more... )

Durmstrang and Beauxbatons! Nice!
I'll start by saying I'm not really a boat person, and I don't have the space or the budget for this set... But! Despite that, I look at it and have to say it's a thing of beauty. They did a really great job on it. The smaller sized Beauxbatons' carriage is lovely, so well done. I still think it's a shame they've included it in the set with the ship, however, as I would have preferred the set $30 cheaper, but for those that missed it the first time around, I'm sure it will be appreciated. Also, take a moment to appreciate that box art. So much better than the art for the Great Hall, they've done well here, too.
Madame Maxime uses the maxi legs we've seen in the Avatar sets, meaning she's more posable for the first time. Fleur is nothing new, but Krum, Karkaroff, and Crouch Sr. are great minifigs (although it seems odd that Karkaroff hasn't got black hair) and welcome additions to the list of characters. Karkaroff and Crouch are first appearances since the reboot. Krum is the first appearance of that version.
There's some interior to the ship, not much, but then they had to invent it, and it gets the job done. ( Read more... )

News on the summer Harry Potter lego lineup!
And a bit of news on the summer 2024 wave of Harry Potter lego sets has leaked from Poland! (I believe it's a general lego blog / fan site along the lines of stonewars or promobricks, but as the name and subtitle are in a picture, I'm unable to just run the translator over it.) As with all news we get at this time of year, it's provisional and there will likely be some changes, but the source has been deemed fairly reliable by a few individuals I've known for a while and trust. (FOMO is unfortunately a contaminant; I've held off reporting to wait for the additional confirmation as I was unfamiliar with the original source, fanklockow.pl.) Generally something like this tends to be based on someone's description of a fuzzy picture, or their description of someone's description (like promobricks attempting to describe the Gringotts vaults last year... Chinese whispers, ftw!), so the things that are most likely to be mistaken are the names of minifigs included (like the time Yaxley was mistaken for Lucius Malfoy in the Ministry of Magic set) or small details. Promobricks: News on the March 2023 sets! (spoilers ahead) Woohoo!
A final observation: as an added information bonus, the set numbers we now know provide a hint that we're likely to see at least six other sets in the summer wave. π Let the wishful thinking begin! (Isn't it a pity "magical thinking" means something else entirely? It would have fit so well. π)

Winter 2022 Lego Harry Potter Wave(!) Leaks!
And that would be all they've said about the sets at this time. I'll be sure to keep you posted when there's more.
A note as to our source: the promobricks video with all the info. While it's unlikely to be of much interest to you as it's in German, you can still give them an upvote for providing us with this preview, so maybe click through and show them a little love? β€οΈ
(And a cheery thanks to lego_guyon02 and GF for their respective heads up. Much appreciated.)

The pieces behind the doors are visible below, go ahead and take a guess what they'll build, and you can "unfold" parts of this post to see if you're right. ππ And so we continue with the next 5 days of this year's Harry Potter advent calendar 75981, and it's shaping up to be a very nice addition to the Clock Tower 75948 set indeed. (The previous five days of the calendar can be found here, if you're looking for them.)

The Advent Calendar!
In the meantime, I guess I'll just get started with the advent calendar... ππ

Goblet of Fire. Harry's, Hermione's and Ron's fourth year, students from rival schools Beauxbatons and Durmstrang arrive at the castle to compete in the Triwizard Challenge, taking place after a roughly two century long hiatus (for safety concerns) to help commemorate Hogwarts' 1000 year anniversary. The Yule Ball is the highlight of the festivities that year, a formal winter dance for all students fourth year and above.

Clock Tower 75948
The 2020 calendar 75981, centres on the Yule Ball and is a nice compliment to the Clock Tower 75948 set. (Worth noting, the calendar basically retires now. As with all the other advent calendars lego makes, if there are sets left over, obviously you can pick them up later and often cheaper, but no more are in production, so if you want it, get on it, or resign yourself to picking it up off ebay / bricklink / brickowl / etc. (You can sometimes get pretty good deals on auctions of used past years' sets.))

The pictures above is from the inside of the calendar. To play along at home, try to find the door you'd need to open in the picture. The pieces behind the doors are visible below, go ahead and take a guess what they'll build, and you can "unfold" parts of this post to see if you're right. HP Lego Sets in Chronological Order (2018 - present)

If anyone can recommend any changes to the list, please don't hesitate to comment. If you are looking for the list of retiring sets, go here.

Retiring Sets From the Current HP Series (2018 - present)
Given the Black Friday / Cyber Monday sales and Christmas shopping, this seems a useful list to cobble together. This is an attempt to list all the sets from the current series of Harry Potter lego, by year of release, with notes as to which sets are officially retired already or should retire soon, the books / movies they represent, and the minifigs included in the sets.
As for anything that hasn't been listed as "retired" or "retiring", I'd still prioritise buying the older sets off your wishlists first. Stonewars.de is the source for the information on which sets will be retiring soon or in 2021, as for the ones marked "RETIRING NOW" they are currentlydisappearing from lego stores around the world, and brickset lists them as no longer available in some countries' online lego stores. Don't panic, often you can find a recently retired set in toy stores near you, but if you want one, you need to act soon so you won't find yourself paying exorbitant prices on the resale market.

The Tasks...

A couple of nice details from task 2: the way the hair seems to "float" (excellent piece choices!) and the way the chains on Hermione and Ron are drawn taut. (I can't quite see how the latter was achieved, to the extent that I asked myself if it was "photographed" upside down. It might be the same mechanism that keeps Harry suspended, however, and simply not more visible from that angle. Either way, I like the result, as well as the idea that a digital set might not be subject to the same restrictions a physical one might. Why *not* display it upside down?) The blue branch pieces (plant leaves 4x3 medium azure) also work a lot better than I expected. (Live and learn, lol.) But if I should happen across a batch, I now see their usefulness... π
Not sure which modelling software he's using, but in a perfect world, the "sleeping" faces from the original second task set 4762 Rescue From the Merpeople lend it an extra something if you're trying to recreate it at home. Hermione's face appeared in two minifigs from a total of three sets in 2005 and 2007. Ron's face appeared on one minifig in the same three sets. Caveat: those figs' waking expressions were a bit of a letdown, and I much prefer the current series of minifigs (they've done some great work with them), but it was definitely good for this scene.
