Summer 2023 Harry Potter lego set news!
We're not expecting to see any official news on the summer sets until May, and as any good fan knows, 02 May 2023 is the canonical 25th anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts, so I'm hoping for a nice promotional event. (lego, are you listening?) In fact, it fits so nicely, I'll be seriously disappointed if they don't do it. Seriously, they do a "May the 4th be with you" event every year for the Star Wars fans, so I want to see some love for the Harry Potter fandom, too. Full stop. That's me, greedy, needy and oh so demanding. 😉
Official plans aside, promobricks (PB) had a German podcast on this for Easter, eurobricks' bRICKbRAT provided the missing set names, and yesterday the English promobricks (PBeng) video channel updated with the new info, and appearing more or less at the same time, an article on the German StoneWars (SW) site, with an assist from Brick_Clicker, added still more details. Unfortunately there are a few discrepancies between the versions, so I'll try to highlight them.
Sets due for release on 01. June 2023 (note, that's probably the European release date, and it might be different in the states and elsewhere):
Three Brickheadz sets:
40616 Harry & Cho $19.99 | 267 pieces (10+) | presumably Gryffindor and Ravenclaw robes. There's no leaker confirmation yet, but I'm expecting them to be in their Quidditch uniforms as both are seekers for their teams, and it explains the character choices.
40617 Draco & Cedric $19.99 | 262 pieces (10+) | presumably Slytherin and Hufflepuff robes. Here again, there's no leaker confirmation yet, but I'm expecting them to be in their Quidditch uniforms as both are seekers for their teams, and it explains the character choices.
40618 Kinglsley Shacklebolt & Nymphadora Tonks $19.99 | 250 pieces (10+) - A wild guess, they will have nothing to do with Quidditch and will not be in their House uniforms. As for why these two are paired... *shrug* Long before Lupin and Tonks were a thing, she and Kingsley were Aurors who worked together and as we already got a Moody BrickHead last year, these two were grouped. That said, I've no idea how lego's marketing department is presenting this set.
Regular sets:
76414 Expecto Patronum $64.99 or 69.99 EUR | 754 рieces (14+) | 2 minifigs (Harry Potter and Remus Lupin) - This is a 2 in 1 set to build either Harry's stag Patronus or Lupin's wolf. (Interesting detail, we never actually see the wolf Patronus cast in the films, but I can picture it having a certain appeal for
erexen. Oh, and Lavender Brown. 😆) Accroding to PBeng, it includes a new wand element that is expected to clip on wands to represent the Expecto Patronum Charm.
76415 The Battle of Hogwarts $84.99 | 730 pieces (9+) | 7 minifigs (Harry Potter, Voldemort with Nagini, Molly Weasley, Bellatrix Lestrange, Neville Longbottom with Gryffindor's Sword, Scabior, Professor McGonagall and a "guardian statue" - it's unclear if the last is buildable or an 8th minifig) - For the first time we're seeing a set of the final battle between Harry and Voldemort from DH2. It should be compatible with the 2021+ modular system. There was a report a couple of weeks ago (PB) that it might include another version of the Clock Tower, but neither the latest promobricks video (PBeng) nor stonewars (SW) articles repeated that claim. As that would be the third Clock Tower since the 2018 reboot, the initial news was greeted with more than a little ambivalence. Personally I'm still rooting for the Bell Towers, a build that would actually lend itself to the modular format for once. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
This is an interesting departure for the theme, as I don't think we've ever seen a set pairing victims with their killers before, and here we have not one, but four death matches all of a sudden. (Yes, I counted Neville vs. Nagini. 😛) It's probably not too unreasonable from a set literally named after the pinnacle battle, and the eighth film wasn't exactly for the younger set either, but it is unusual for this lego theme. Moving forward, I'll need to change the parameters for my guesswork as to future inclusions. Also worth noting, the 2022 Advent Calendar was the last set released from the previous HP design team management. Marcos Bessa stepped back as theme head roughly two years ago, in April 2021, leaving the HP group entirely at the beginning of last year, and this may well be a visible consequence of the change in leadership. Or perhaps lego is finally just acknowledging the source material, and creating the sort of sets for HP like they do for other themes (see Star Wars as a for instance).
It's more than a little disappointing that it includes Neville and Voldemort, two of the seven figs of the otherwise fairly lacklustre lego Harry Potter 2022 Advent Calendar. The figs were basically all the set had going for it, so it's a pity they're devaluing it further. Also, until now the minifigs in the ACs had come after previous appearances, which allowed customers to make an informed decision if the ACs were worth the price, so yes, disappointing. There's reason to hope they won't repeat the mistake so thoroughly with the 2023 AC, however. (see further down)
76416 Quidditch Trunk $64.99 or 69.99 EUR | 599 рieces (9+) | there's disagreement as to the figures included and even the number thereof. As with the 2022 Hogwarts trunk, this set will be a Build Your Own Sigfig / Minifigs with Quidditch uniforms from all four Houses with at least 10 heads in five (gw) or six (PBeng) skin tones, and at least 10 hair pieces. For reference, last year's trunk set 76399 included 12 heads in a total of five skin tones, with six torsos and legs / skirts, and 18 hair pieces. The parts included in this year's set should allow for the building of Harry Potter, and figs that at least resemble Draco Malfoy, Cho Chang, and Cedric Diggory, but it remains unclear at present how many minifigs can be built simultaneously. The interior of the buildable chest contains a small Quidditch pitch play set with Quidditch accessories like brooms, Quaffles and Bludgers, the goal rings and House Cup.
76421 Dobby the (buildable) House Elf with sock, Tom Riddle's diary and Petunia Dursley's cake $39.99 or 29.99 EUR | 403 pieces (8+) | likely no minifigs included (SW). This is expected to more closely resemble the film appearance of Dobby and not be an oversized minifig (like we saw for Hermione and Harry).
Sets due for release on 01. August 2023:
76422 Weasleys Wizard Wheezes $89.99 | 834 pieces (8+) | 7 minifigs (lineup as yet unknown, although the twins seem a probable inclusion) - This will be a smaller play scale version of the Weasley brothers' store than the one first and last seen in 2020's Diagon Alley. The size is apparently more in keeping with the Hogsmeade shops (76388: Hogsmeade Village Visit $89.99 | 851 pieces). The 2020 version used roughly 1300 pieces, worked out to a price of roughly $110 and of course would have included far fewer minifigs if we distribute them evenly across the set. Looking at the piece count and comparing it to my HP mod of the Holiday Main Street set (Horizont Alley), it might still be able to pull it off with the proper form, although the additional licensing fees for the theme could make that a squeeze, so I'm not sure we'll see anything other than the WWW included here.
76423 Hogwarts Express & Hogsmeade Station $129.99 | 1074 pieces (8+) | 8 minifigs (lineup as yet unknown) - As the name implies, we'll be seeing the Hogsmeade Station for the first time since 2004, and a new release of the Hogwarts Express. As there's literally been some version (see below) of the Express on the shelves almost the entire time there've been Harry Potter legos, the latter should come as no surprise, since the 2018 version retired in December 2022.
The History of Minifig Scale Hogwarts Expresses:
* 2001 4708 Hogwarts Express 1st edition - Platform 9 3/4, PS; retired 2003
* 2004 4758 Hogwarts Express 2nd edition - Hogsmeade Station (very lite), PoA Lupin & Dementor; retired 2005
* 2004 10132 Hogwarts Express (2nd edition?) motorised - Hogsmeade Station (more proper), PoA Lupin & Dementor; retired 2005
* With the exception of 5378 (released in 2007), there were no new sets in the theme from 2006 through 2009.
* 2010 4841 Hogwarts Express 3rd edition - CoS with Ford Anglia (but also Ginny and Luna?); retired 2011
* There were no new sets in the theme from 2012 through 2017.
* 2018 75955 Hogwarts Express 4th Edition - Platform 9 3/4, PS / PoA Lupin & Dementor; retired 2022
* It's in an altogether different category, but for the sake of completion: 2022 76405 Hogwarts Express Collectors' Edition - Platform 9 3/4, PS / PoA / HBP / Epilogue
Looking at that, I'd say we were due for a Hogwarts Express in 2023, this time with a Hogsmeade Station, plus that inclusion allows them to continue their series of Hogsmeade sets without having to commit to it in a larger fashion as stand alone sets. In 2021 we had the Three Broomsticks and Honeydukes, 2022 gave us the Shrieking Shack, and now for 2023 there's the Hogsmeade Station. At a guess, I'd say the Hog's Head, Zonko's and Madam Puddifoot's are likely future builds were they to keep it up. Similarly the next Hogwarts Express should have the Anglia again if they stick to the rota. As we've already seen two Fords since the reboot alone, I think it will definitely be up there with the possible things to include, although I'd prefer to see it in a "Forbidden Forest / Anglia rescue from the spiders" scene.
Sets due for release on 01. September 2023:
76417 D2C GRINGOTTS $429.99 | 4804 pieces (18+) | no word on the number of minifigs yet, or whether the focus is DH or PS - Word of the piece count is new, and will make this the fourth largest set in the Harry Potter theme. It's unclear what we can expect the set to include at that price, although a rail system / track (I'm so not a fan) has repeatedly been explicitly mentioned as part of the set. It is, however, supposed to be Diagon Alley scale, which is some consolation. Speculation about a dragon remains popular, but thoroughly unverified (and once again, I'd rather not). Frankly at that price point, I would far rather see some of Knockturn Alley or more of Diagon Alley included. We'll have to wait and see. The release of a smaller WWW this summer might suggest that if this Gringotts proves too expensive for some (most), there's legitimate hope that a more affordable one might someday be made.
76418 lego Harry Potter Advent Calendar 2023 $44.99 or 37.99 EUR | 227 pieces (7+) | at least 6 minifigs (Harry with a new hood piece, Hermione in a new hat piece, Ron also in a winter cap, Draco in a recolour of the Ushanka, Madam Rosmerta (proprietor of the Three Broomsticks tavern) and Aberforth Dumbledore (owner of the Hog's Head pub)) - I've already reported on the leaks as to the minifigs, I take this as our confirmation. According to PBeng, the set will be DH themed, I believe this to be an error. Looking at their outfits and considering their midi legs, I think it will instead focus on the third year Hogsmeade visit in PoA, when Harry in his Invisibility Cloak torments Draco and his friends near the Shrieking Shack as Hermione and Ron look on. nanobuilds should include the Three Broomsticks, Honeydukes, Zonko's, and the Hog's Head. Could the latter two be a nod future sets? Hmm... As there are significantly fewer pieces than last year and the price has gone up (yet again), I sincerely hope they're laying off the nanobuilds and returning to the format of past years with more minifig scale builds, the fact more weren't mentioned gives me a little hope. Again in light of their outfits, I do think it's correct to say the set should be more wintery / Christmassy than recent HP ACs have been.
Pure speculation... I mentioned above that they might not reuse such a significant part of the 2023 AC after its release. Here's why: We've already seen Madam Rosmerta and the Three Broomsticks. The trio and Draco, although new, are clearly from the same scene at the Shrieking Shack, which has already been released as a location as well. The only logical minifig to repeat from the AC at this point is Aberforth in a Hog's Head set, and the two most likely versions of that would be the sign up meeting for Dumbledore’s Army in OotP and the scene from DH2 where the trio sneak into Hogwarts from the pub. This year, especially with the DH2 RoR / RoHT and BoH, would have been a sensible year for the pub, but we're getting the Hogsmeade Station instead. So if they were to continue with the Hogsmeade shoppes, next year we could see Puddifoot's, say, with the Hog's Head pub, Harry and Cho make sense as customers in both, plus Aberforth and the caff owner, and that leaves a few slots free for whichever characters they decide would round out the scenes. It still reuses a fig after the AC, but as long as they aren't sticking exclusively to nanobuilds again, reusing only two elsewhere, one of which is known in advance and the other of which is reasonably predictable, seems fair. If on the other hand they figure out a way to reuse the trio and Draco too, I can see the interest in the ACs plummeting.
76419 Micro / nanoscale Hogwarts & Grounds D2C 169.99 EUR | 2660 pieces (18+) - a second set aimed at adult collectors of the theme is expected to depict the entire Hogwarts castle and its grounds, including the Quidditch pitch, Forbidden Forest, and Black Lake. The piece count and price, coupled with the more ambitious material would strongly indicate how much smaller this set should be than the current 71043 nanoscale Hogwarts. There's no word yet on minifigures or the potential inclusion of statuettes. Some examples of MOCs of nanoscale Hogwarts can be found on rebrickable.
UNKNOWN TIME OF RELEASE:
We can expect an HP based GWP at some point. It should be a Gringotts vault, whether from PS or DH is presently unclear. The DH visit to Bellatrix's vault is probably more interesting as stories go, but I can see them balking at the inclusion of so many cups, so we'll need to wait and see. Remember to plan your shopping accordingly.
And that's all the news on the sets we're expecting in the near(ish) future.

Also! Large wolf patronus! Not two patronuses at the same time, but one massive wolf patronus! (I laughed.) There may also be some hope for modding an "Always" doe out of the stag without much faffing about. Hmm...
Keeping you guys in my thoughts. 😘
