First Peek at the 2022 HP Advent Calendar

Sure enough, the same time as last year the first picture of the Advent Calendar has leaked. It's not great quality, but good enough to guess what we have to look forward to. WARNING, POTENTIAL SPOILERS. Proceed with caution. (Nothing more than the box art, however.)

The calendar is set 76404, and the picture above is from a Japanese lego catalogue. (Page 99)
It also finally provides us with the answer to where the presumptive Tonks minifig head will turn up. Things that appear to be included:

1. Harry, in Hogwarts robes with short legs

2. Purple-haired Tonks

3. Hedwig

4. Micro Hogwarts Express

5. Micro 9 3/4 Platform

6. Micro Whomping Willow with the Weasleys' Ford Anglia

7. Micro Quidditch hoops

8. Goblet of Fire with the candidate's name

9. (if it isn't just the sky...) the blue tone behind Hedwig is typical of Pixies and Patronuses, but I can't make out the details. Ron's is the notable exception on the Patronus front... (Snape's, too, obviously, but a doe should be far too large for an AC.) I mean, we even have Luna's and Umbridge's. I won't get my hopes up, but last year we saw a number of exclusive pieces in the calendar. Aside from Tonks, I'm wondering what new things we'll see here.

Whether Voldemort will also be included (as it's the remaining as yet unaccounted for head piece) remains to be seen. Given what feels like the lack of curation in this set, anything seems possible, although placing him in an Accessory Pack to reenact the Battle at the Ministry of Magic from OotP with what is otherwise a DHI MoM set seems more promising.

As for the AC, I have to admit, I'm not a fan of the micro builds, and for the life of me I can't fathom why they wouldn't have made a Christmas at Grimmauld Place advent calendar to go with the Grimmauld Place set. It could have included a recovering Arthur in Christmas crown and wheelchair (inclusion is always good), and Ginny and Hermione, all of whom were missing from the GP set, which was frankly a bit of a sausage fest with 7 of nine minifigs being males. I'd have kept the extra Tonks, such a variable character deserved more than one representation. I can't recall if Percy puts in an appearance in the scenes (actually I think he doesn't), but that would have been a chance to include the fig in an actual set as opposed to just a book that most fans won't have.

What else? Well the 12GP set includes the troll foot umbrella stand and I believe a portrait of Walburga, so perhaps a doxy nest, some spiders. A writing desk to house the Bogart, a fireplace to Floo through. That would give us a bit of structure to flesh out the sparse rooms from the set. (If they were clever about it, it could encourage people to get a second GP to make a larger MOC... 😉) Snakeskins, bottles of blood, boxes of Wartcap Powder all willing to put up a fight. A couple of house-elf heads mounted for the walls... The Blacks clearly knew how to decorate. 😆 But most of all what was largely missing last year: a bit of Christmas fluff and frippery.

That's all we have for now. I can't help feeling the result is a bit of a shame as the lego Advent Calendars are some of my favourite things, and this one seems... anticlimactic. I'll just have to wait and see if the other inclusions appeal to me more.
